Gentlemen,
I hope that all of you are having a refreshing summer break. As you enjoy you time away from the pressures of school, it is time to begin your individual training that will prepare you for the soccer season.
What to do?
--Early morning or evening running. Begin by running around the block, the next day run around two blocks, then three, and so on till you are running several miles. Have your parents drive and check the distance with the odometer
--Plyometrics. These are simple but painful leg strength exercises (i.e. lunges, squat jumps, jogging backwards, high knees, butt kickers). Look online or YouTube for more of how to do them.
--Play soccer (FIFA 2008 does not count). If you are playing on a team that's fantastic but if not you can still be playing the game. Start a pick-up game at the park, kick around with a friend, or play on your own. How can I play alone? 1) Juggle, 2) Practice moves on invisible opponent, 3) Shoot on target, 4) Practice still shots, moving shots, volleys, and shots after you pass an invisible opponent. 5) If you plan on being a striker for DOHS you should be taking 50-100 shots per day every time you practice. Practice makes perfect.
Finally, I should be giving all interested players a phone calls soon about intramurals in mid-July.
Coach Matthews
